Article of the Week - This is usually assigned on Day 1 and due on the following Day 6. If Day 6 falls on a Monday, I will usually take it on Tuesday.
Tips and Responsibilities: DO NOT LEAVE THIS UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! Think about your schedule and do a little piece or part over a few nights.
They are always posted so you always have access. You can't forget, leave it at school, or not have it because of absence. You are responsible for getting the article from me, Google Classroom, or my Weebly page.
Assignment:
1.Examine the title, captions, excerpts, pictures or graphics and come up with a question or two to give you a purpose for reading. One should always read with a question in mind.
2. Listen to it read aloud by the teacher or read it to yourself with nothing in your hands.
3. At a second reading, annotate by circling key words and main ideas, underlining supporting details, putting a squiggly line or a ? to mark confusion. You may also choose to use some of our text coding symbols.
4. In the right hand margin, jot (post) your thoughts, reactions, reflections, connections, questions, or what you are wondering.
5. Write a ONE PAGE reflection paper that discusses one or two points from the article and addresses your opinion, comments on the significance, speculates on the future... This is not a summary! You must refer to specific pieces of the article to support your position. (Must fill a page,be typed or handwritten, can be informal (1st person), must be edited!)
Please note- While steps 3 & 4 can be done simultaneously, it really depends on the article and your understanding. Sometimes it is wise to read it and annotate and then go back and make more sense of it.
